Some new promotional material & the extra copies at the Education Fair

Our fine institution will participate at the Education Fair in Belgrade this week. We won’t be alone – our booth will consist of American Embassy, American Corner and World Learning, people who are in charge of the “Forecast” program.

The Education Fair will be the event where we offer every copy of promotional material available. That also includes brand new EducationUSA CD and USB sticks, leaflets, posters and several beach balls :-) The summer is coming along, we have to think ahead.

Some institutional promotional material arrived this week as well. Most of it will be available for you at the Education Fair, organized from March 11 to March 13 at the Belgrade’s Hotel Continental.

Central Michigan University has sent us another copy of their booklet describing their 200+ programs in brief.

Boston University School of Management has reminded us of their programs with two additional booklets.

Pepperdine University – Seaver College has also sent us two additional copies of their booklets.

Evergreen State College has sent us something new – Undergraduate Catalog for 2010-2011.

Cyrillic is Back

With the ACT announcement we have started brand new procedure that will be applied in the future. The Cyrillic documents are back!

The very last document uploaded to our web site has been created in several different versions. From now on, the Cyrillic version will be always used for all documents in Serbian language at our web page. The previous set of important documents will be transferred into the Cyrillic version as we go along and prepare for the full transition to the new web site design.

We will not get rid of the Latin alphabet – every document in Serbian will also be published in it if possible. The advantage will be given to the Cyrillic letters, so please refresh your knowledge :-) Don’t worry about links – they will still be in the proper form.

We haven’t been thinking about the full transition to the Serbian Cyrillic on the web site yet. With all the English language information it would take us a lot more time to translate and post online. We will figure out some way to adapt our web site to fit the need for all the versions.

Right now it would be important to know that all the published files will have standardized ending to their name depending on the version. Cyrillic versions will have the ending “_c”, Latin will end in “_l”, while English versions will end with “_e”. All the files published will have the same content, just published in different alphabet.

The Decision Month

At last, the Decision Month!
Many of you are frantically checking your e-mail inbox these days for answers. Colleges and universities are wrapping up their responses and this month ahead will be joyous and nerve-wracking at the same time.
Our members and young people we advised should contact us immediately if there is any problem during this process. Please do not respond immediately and without thinking to e-mail messages you receive from colleges. That may end up as single biggest mistake of your application procedure. Our advice is free and unbiased – but there is also a chance to schedule a private consultation with adviser if you need strategic help. Even if you are not a member of the Center, our door is open. Call us or send us an e-mail at office@iacbg.org and we will try to assist you any way we can.
Students who are planning to apply later this year have all the opportunity to prepare with us and ask questions about their path to studying in the US. Preparation for SAT has started couple of weeks ago, TOEFL prep starts on March 3, GRE and GMAT started two weeks ago. If you are late for these prep courses, next three-month prep courses will start somewhere in May.
Undergraduate and graduate advising sessions will be organized twice this month, and the undergraduate open house will run virtually every Wednesday. Don’t forget to call ahead and schedule your presence at these events, as there may be limited space available. Check many of these events on our Calendar – https://sites.google.com/a/iacbg.org/www/calendar.
There is a small chance some of these events won’t be visible for a while as we are transferring to online application for these events. Stay tuned for more info and remember to give us your e-mail address when you call our office.
Testing will resume at somewhat regular rhythm this month. There will be two TOEFL iBT testing dates in the Center, while the GMAT testing will not be available last week of the month due to the international conference we will be attending.
Many of you have asked about March SAT – please read the collegeboard.com site carefully. This testing is in the US territory only – the very next one in Serbia is scheduled at May 1st. Deadline to register for this test is March 31.
Some of us will be travelling abroad for the Workshop for advisors in Prague, later in March. We will come back with more knowledge and more connections to assist you better and faster. There is no doubt that we will learn plenty, but others will be able to pick up some knowledge from us as we will be presenting, too.
Our external program members will be notified about more activities this month. Prepare your browsers as we would organize some webinars and similar events.
Speaking of webinars – you can follow announcements on our regular site, forum, Facebook or Twitter. Either way, read carefully what the webinar is about and inform us if you will attend it. We noticed that some of you just click without thinking and find themselves at the wrong webinar.
US Embassy should have its booth at the Education Fair in Belgrade and our organization is going to be there. If you couldn’t come to us any other time, now this would be the time to do it. You can learn a lot about studying in the US, become our member and possibly get something more. We will publish more information about this Fair soon. In the meantime, plan to come to the MBA Fair on March 10 and to the Education Fair from March 11 to March 13. Read more about the fair at this site – www.edufair.rs.
I mentioned online application for our events earlier and I feel I need to clarify that a bit. People who are interested in our activities will be able to fill out questionnaires and forms and announce their presence at our events in the future. We are starting this project seriously in March and one by one activity will have this option. Our intention is also to decrease the number of phone calls and possible confusion that may cause with missed and returned calls. There is just way too many people to deal with, so we have to switch to easier solutions. Read your e-mail more frequently and you won’t miss a thing.
The previous announcement also goes with our increased effort to regulate many legal fields in our work. You may have noticed our Ethics principles and standards posted on the wall in the office, but there will also be some other legal documents at your disposal. Just like many other institutions abroad, we respect your right to privacy and do not give your information to third parties. We will not discuss some issues that we may consider private with anybody else but you, so try not to send your relatives to get sensitive information from us. Of course, you will learn more about this in the months to come.
All in all, a lot of work is in the store for us. Please, be patient as we are doing many things at the same time. So it would go like this – the best of luck to all of you who applied to colleges and universities, all the patience to you who are still in the process. Keep in touch!

So It Begins

The very first admission decision has been delivered just couple of days ago. One of our kids has been notified by the Agnes Scott College. There is no word about financial aid – that will have to wait couple more weeks.

We feel this is the start of the year. In 2009 first admission was from Brown University and it was accepted by one of our students.

You probably noticed we do not reveal names here – our goal is to protect your privacy. If you want to brag about your choice, we’ll support you. Until then, no names.

Those of you who received answers from colleges and universities can freely ask whatever questions you may have. Call our office, schedule some private time with the adviser, discuss your options before time runs out.

Parents are welcome, too, as we know they may have many questions. After all, they may be picking up most of the financial burden later in the year.

Remember – it’s always better to consult experts before you hit the “reply” button in your e-mail.

Stay informed using our brand new mailing lists

It was a long and dry period for our mailing list function. There was hardly any regular e-mail being sent to all of our subscribers – we just concentrated on the most important messages.
